  • The Cancer Society of New Zealand is a well-known and highly regarded not for profit organisation dedicated to reducing the incidence and impact of cancer in the community.

    As the result of a recent organisational review The Cancer Society is strengthening its bicultural journey and commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, with a focus on reducing cancer inequities, especially between Maori and non-Maori.

    The Cancer Society works with communities to provide leadership and advocacy in cancer control, with core services in supportive care, health promotion, information, advocacy and research.

    The Canterbury West Coast Division is one of six autonomous divisions that form the federated Cancer Society of New Zealand.

    This key role will report into the Chief Executive and will be responsible for the implementation of their equity charter and strategic development and management of support services.

    Success will be measured by improving health outcomes for Maori whanau, with a significant focus on addressing the disproportionate levels of cancer for Maori communities, hapu and iwi, achieving better health outcomes for tangata whenua.

    You will also have a commitment to the wider community, while leading the team of staff and volunteers who deliver the patient related Supportive Care services throughout the Canterbury West Coast division.

    Your responsibilities will include building working relationships with a range of cancer referral networks, cancer related NGOs and primary health networks.

    You will add value and play a key role in the work of the Cancer Society of New Zealand by contributing to national policy development and service and commitment to the Cancer Society’s Equity Charter.

    To be successful in this position, you will have a background in the health or social services sector, along with a sound understanding of tikanga and kawa and understanding of Te Ao Maori.

    Some knowledge of Te Reo Maori and relationships with tangata whenua will be critical in the success of this role. You will have demonstrated deep commitment to equity and biculturalism, and experience leading transformative cultural shift at an organisational level.

    You will be an excellent communicator and able to demonstrate an ability to build positive relationships. Additionally, you will have proven senior leadership experience and a passion for leading and developing teams along with a hands on’ approach.

    Experience building partnerships with iwi / Maori organisations within communities will be a distinct advantage, as will a passion for championing diversity and inclusion in the workforce.

    A full unrestricted driver’s licence is essential.
