What you will do

You will develop, cultivate and maintain part of a nationwide property programme focussed on commercial property relationships with iwi partners of Te Ope Kātua o Aotearoa (the NZ Defence Force).

Key responsibilities include :

  • Maintaining enduring and long-term partnerships with iwi;
  • Operating as the programme manager for initiatives and projects required to help deliver the iwi property programme;
  • Initiating and facilitating consultations and negotiations with iwi partners from a property / tenure related perspective;
  • Briefing and reporting senior members of the Defence Force and stakeholders on progress with the iwi property programme and interrelated dependencies; and
  • Upskilling the wider team on issues related to tikanga Māori.
  • Please note : This position requires some domestic travel throughout New Zealand, so a full drivers' license is essential.

    What we need

    You will have a working knowledge of the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi), and an understanding of property and preferably contract law to effectively foster relationships between the Crown and Māori.

    You will be self-motivated, determined and solution-focussed; with an ability to readily identify potential effects and have honest conversations around them.

    You will also bring :

  • Experience in relationship and commercial contract development and management;
  • An ability to pick an organisation's culture and identify how to work effectively within it;
  • Refined and superior written communication skills; and
  • Experience in researching and assimilating information from a wide range of sources.
  • An understanding of tikanga Māori and an ability to converse in Te Reo would be highly preferable.

    Defence Estate Infrastructure's purpose is to develop, maintain and manage land, property and infrastructure assets in order to support NZDF military capabilities and all of government outcomes, through the Defence Estate Regeneration Programme.

    The Defence estate comprises over 80,000ha of land with infrastructure and buildings with a replacement value of some $4.
