Midwifery First Year of Practice

Dunedin

  • Looking for your First Year of Practice Opportunity?
  • Want a supportive and caring team?
  • Looking for a mix of lifestyle and work?
  • At Southern District Health Board (SDHB) we value our community and it is therefore vital to us that we take the very best care of our women, their babies and whanau at such an important time in their lives.

We have a Midwifery First Year of Practice programme specifically tailored to new graduates running in both of our Main Hospitals, Dunedin for 1 year at 64 hours per fortnight.

    Your Opportunity

At Queen Mary Maternity Centre, based in Dunedin Hospital, we birth around 1,800 babies every year and offer primary birthing facilities as well as being a secondary and tertiary level obstetric service provider for the Otago / Southland region.

We consider ourselves to be very fortunate working in Queen Mary, as not only do we get to care for fabulous women and families from all across our diverse region, we also get to work alongside kind, compassionate, dedicated midwives and other health professionals to provide a safe and positive birthing experience.

We work very closely with the midwifery and medical schools as well as LMCs to ensure we give the kind of care our patients deserve.

We are looking for new graduates with a commitment to quality care and the embodiment of the Southern DHB values, Kind, Open, Positive and a Sense of Community in all that they do.

    How it works?

As a new graduate in your Midwifery First Year of Practice , you will be rostered for shifts across antenatal, delivery and postnatal areas in a fully supportive environment with a nominated preceptor.

You will receive a comprehensive orientation with supported educational opportunities. Southern DHB has close affiliations with local tertiary education providers so there are excellent opportunities for your continued learning.

Don’t take our word for it, here’s what one of our previous intakes say :

I graduated at the end of 2020 with my Bachelor of Midwifery and was fortunate to gain one of the new graduate midwife positions here at Queen Mary for 2021.

I feel very grateful for this opportunity. Learning and practising the essential midwifery skills surrounded by such a supportive and experienced team has been exactly what I needed to improve my confidence and knowledge.

It has been a very busy year but one where I have always felt supported and nurtured by the other midwives (both core and LMC) and amongst the larger obstetric team.

    About You

We are looking for new graduate midwives who are committed and motivated to become the very best in their profession. You will have exceptional communication skills allowing you to build strong rapport with women and their whanau and also to work within the wider team.

Your attitude, work and approach will be consistent, reliable and you will be a proactive learner who is keen to learn new skills.
