This is an exciting time to join DOC and be part of our highly experienced and motivated team.

The Management Planning team is responsible for identifying what we intend to manage and why. We develop and prepare statutory planning documents that will provide direction for how public conservation lands and waters are managed.

These documents include conservation management strategies, national park plans and conservation management plans.

We work with Treaty Partners to realise their aspirations and interests, build strong working relationships with multiple teams across DOC and engage with the public and other stakeholders to understand what conservation means to them.

The role involves managing complex processes by engaging with Treaty partners, developing strategic policy direction, and working with relevant conservation boards, the New Zealand Conservation Authority, and the Minister of Conservation.

As well as the Management Planning Team, you will work closely with DOC's Technical, Legal and Policy teams to inform your work and provide advice as required to support wider teams within the Department.

We are a national team with two service centres based in Christchurch and Hamilton, with staff distributed in other locations.

These roles could be based in regional offices outside of Hamilton and Christchurch, so please state in your covering letter where you'd prefer to be based.

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako Skills and experience

You need to have strong analytical and organisational ability and excellent written and oral communication skills. You may have experience and knowledge of planning processes, particularly strategic plan development and policy writing.

You will be a team player and have a proven record of successful relationship building. Knowledge of te ao Māori and experience working with Treaty partners would be preferred but is not essential.

There can be times when the workload will be high so you will need to be able to remain calm and focused and be comfortable working under pressure.

Key Skills :

  • Knowledge of planning disciplines or policy development
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, engagement, and relationship management skills
  • Personal attributes including resilience and flexibility, with an ability to work in an ambiguous environment
  • Tertiary qualification or relevant experience in areas such as planning, resource management or law
  • Experience working with Treaty partners or understanding of te ao Māori would be an advantage
