The New Zealand Law Society is seeking expressions of interest for the position of lay member on a Lawyers Standards Committees in Waikato / Bay of Plenty.

Standards Committees consider complaints about lawyers. Each Standards Committee is required to have at least one lay member and appointments are made by the Board of the New Zealand Law Society.

This is a voluntary role.

You do not need to have any pre-existing expertise or knowledge of the law but must be a person of integrity and good standing in your community.

You will be of good character and possess the skill, experience and judgement needed to deal with complaints and make appropriate decisions.

A person whose name is on the Roll of Barristers and Solicitors at the High Court is not eligible for appointment.

If successful, you will be expected to attend regular meetings, usually monthly. In preparation for the meetings you will be sent information to read and consider.

Although this is a voluntary role, you will receive a nominal meeting fee of $135.00 and your travel expenses will be reimbursed.
