Do you have an interest in promoting Mahinga Kai and restoring the mauri of waterways within Ōtautahi, Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū and Kaitorete?

Mahaanui Kurataiao Ltd. is an environmental services agency currently owned by six Papatipu Rūnanga in Canterbury who provide advice in relation to the land and resources within the Waimakariri, Christchurch and Selwyn Districts.

We are a small organisation that has a large impact with potential to grow through a range of services.

A new role within Mahaanui Kurataiao has just been created for a Senior Environmental Advisor with specific knowledge and experience in mahinga kai and with an interest in restoring the mauri of waterways.

The role is specific to waterbodies within the territorial boundaries of Christchurch City which includes Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū (Banks Peninsula) and Kaitorete Spit.

The successful candidate will be working with Mahaanui Kurataiao and the Christchurch City Council staff to promote mahinga kai and to restore the mauri of waterways.

This may involve the development of field-based research and waterway monitoring programmes that integrate cultural values, including associated databases and archives, as well as designing and conducting research and projects that relate to water quality as well as Taonga species and habitats in the riparian environment.

The successful candidate will support the Christchurch City Council to develop programmes and projects related to waterways and mahinga kai which integrate cultural values as well as assisting the Council to meet culturally based consent conditions.

This may require being part of Council project teams and / or initiatives. They will also be expected to provide regular reports and briefings to Rūnanga kaitiaki and to facilitate engagement between third parties.

The successful candidate will have :

  • a demonstrate experience as a practitioner of mahinga kai and customary resource management;
  • an open and collaborative working style;
  • excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • an understanding of Te Ao Māori, Te Tiriti o Waitangi and Ngāi Tahu values;
  • familiarity of te reo Māori and tikanga (necessary to perform the functions of the role);
  • an interest in the evolving role of Māori in Aotearoa / New Zealand's environmental management.
  • Mahaanui Kurataiao Ltd. has a diverse and busy portfolio covering requests for cultural input and advice to private individuals, developers, government agencies and councils.

    This advice is focused on mātauranga Māori, and the values and interests of Ngā Papatipu Rūnanga. The role of Mahaanui Kurataiao is to facilitate this input and inform the development of strategies, policies and environmental projects from a cultural perspective.
