Job Description

Fire and Emergency New Zealand is a Crown Entity established on 1 July 2017 under the Fire and Emergency New Zealand Act 2017.

Our new, unified organisation provides services designed to deliver better outcomes for New Zealand's communities in terms of emergency prevention and response.

We now have vacancies for two Emergency Response Coordinators to provide emergency response to the Milford Sound area and the Milford Sound Village in line with Fire and Emergency requirements.

The roles are four days on four days off shifts.

The key focus of the role is responding to Fire and Emergency incidents including providing medical first response within organisational policy and procedures and to support and mentor the local Fire and Emergency volunteers to maintain a state of operational readiness and ongoing sustainability with respect to medical first response and other incidents that arise at times.

You will be involved in engaging with local communities, other emergency responders, Fire and Emergency stakeholders and key operational personnel across the region to implement operational response plans and to ensure that prevention and education programmes are in place help to build a resilient community and to reduce the consequence and impact of incidents.

You will also be working closely with the Deputy Principal Rural Fire Officers to provide operational capability across Southland.

A relevant certification in medical emergency response is essential with a minimum certification in pre-hospital emergency response care.

Ideally you have experience responding to emergency situations whether medical, accident or in relation to fire, motor vehicle and / or civil defence emergencies.

This is a remote area and you need to be a person who is flexible and adaptable and able to work unsupervised.

You also need to demonstrate the following skills and attributes :

  • Adaptability and able to demonstrate leadership capability across a wide variety of stakeholders
  • Understanding of volunteering and experience engaging effectively with volunteers
  • Current driver's licence
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work in sync with your counterpart
  • Computer literacy and experience writing reports
  • Strong stewardship and customer service focus
  • Able to work autonomously at times but also in collaboration with colleagues
  • Self-motivated, with a can-do attitude
