  • The mission of the Navy Museum is to gather, protect and share the Navy’s memory and stories, past, present and future.

    What you will do

    In this role you will be responsible for assisting in the care and documentation of the Navy Museum’s collections and the Royal New Zealand Navy’s Fleet Trophy collection.

    You will assist with collection care, storage and movement and with facilitating access to the collections, both physical and intellectual.

    What we need

    We are seeking a person with museum experience including object handling and packing, and familiarity with collection management databases, preferably Vernon CMS.

    You will bring a good understanding of collections management practice and the principles of preventative conservation. In addition to this you can demonstrate an awareness of the concept of Matauranga Maori and other cultural issues in the museum context.

    We are looking for a person with good time management skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

    You will have a museum studies or tertiary qualification and a current NZ driver licence.

    The Collections department seeks to research, collect and care for the heritage of the navy. The collection includes weapons, instruments, ships’ artefacts, uniforms, medals and badges, social history and personal collections, art works, photographs, archives and manuscripts, plans and drawings, and ephemera.

    The minimum citizenship and residency criteria for security clearances to be granted by the NZ Defence Force are as follows :

    Low level Security Clearance

  • Most preferably a NZ citizen, who has resided in this country continuously for at least the last five (5) years, OR
  • Is a citizen of, and / or has resided continuously in one of more of the following countries for the last five (5) years;
  • either Australia, Canada, NZ, the United Kingdom (UK) or the United States of America (USA); and has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the NZ Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at this level.

    If you do not meet these minimum criteria, we will not be able to accept your application.
