NIWA is a dynamic research organisation whose purpose is to enhance the economic value and sustainable management of New Zealand's aquatic resources and environments, to provide understanding of climate and the atmosphere and increase resilience to weather and climate hazards to improve safety and wellbeing of New Zealanders.

NIWA is New Zealand's largest and pre-eminent provider of climate, freshwater and marine science.

NIWA's Climate Database is a significant national resource that enables us to receive, archive and deliver a range of climate-

related data that are used in NIWA operations, research and a range of environmental applications and services.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and skilled technician to assist in maintaining and enhancing the operation of NIWA's Climate Database.

The appointee will provide support for this operation, from data ingestion to delivery, including the quality control systems and troubleshooting of issues affecting timely dataflow.

They will also assist in development of new software and tools for managing data flow and quality control, and in developing our next generation climate database.

Candidates should have a tertiary qualification, or equivalent experience, in science, information technology or engineering.

They should be experienced with scientific data, preferably climate and meteorological, database operations, instrumentation and data-

logging systems. They should also be familiar with data management principles and have an operational knowledge in quality assurance procedures.

Candidates will need excellent computer literacy and be confident operating with SQL databases, particularly Oracle and Postgres, in a Unix environment.

They will need to be competent in operational software code development, including version control and code documentation.

Programming skills are preferred in R, SQL, and (procedural) languages such as Python.

The position requires an ability to work in a team environment, to develop positive working relationships, to be well-organised, focused on quality and adept at problem solving.
