The Ministry is committed to improving its commissioning of social services.We are looking for a highly motivated and engaging Principal Advisor to build cultural capability in matauranga Māori and support work programmes around improving the responsiveness of justice services to the needs of Māori delivered by third parties and other change projects.

This is a new role, giving the successful applicant the ability to develop and shape a work programme that works to your strengths while delivering the following :

  • Development and / or coordination of training and support to build staff capability and confidence to ensure they have the skills and knowledge in matauranga Māori to support effective services in the community.
  • Leading the implementation of the Social Sector Commissioning Principles within the Ministry of Justice, particularly ensuring Māori-Crown partnerships are at the heart of effective decision making.
  • Ensuring the impacts for providers are considered as part of wider policy and government projects.
  • Supporting the implementation of Te Ao Marama, the Chief District Court Judge's vision of the District Court, by ensuring the Ministry can respond to the needs of Māori through the involvement of third-party providers in the justice system.
  • Leading the development of a framework to assess the level of cultural responsiveness of contracted providers in their delivery of servicesThe full scope of the position will be discussed and agreed with the successful candidate.
  • He pūkenga tou / Skills and ExperienceTo be successful in the role you will bring the following :

  • A high level of competency in Te Reo Māori me ōna tikanga.
  • Ability to navigate te Ao Māori and the complex political, social and economic issues faced by Māori, with an understanding of te Tiriti o Waitangi and its relevance to the justice system and contracted services.
  • Ability to develop and maintain strong and effective relationships with key stakeholders (including hapū, iwi and mātāwaka) and within the organisation;
  • to help enable effective partnering to respond to the needs of Māori workforce and communities.

  • Experience in procurement and / or management of social services.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and coordination skills.
  • Ability to work with complexity / ambiguity and able to see the bigger picture' / understand the wider work.

  • The Provider and Community Services unit is responsible for Ministry of Justice contracts with community-based services, such as family violence services, victims' services, restorative justice, family justice services, community law centres, the Public Trust, and coronial services.
