  • Māori will be a rising proportion of the future workforce;
  • the Māori asset base is increasingly diversifying beyond the primary sector;
  • the Māori economy goes far beyond treaty settlements and is increasingly becoming an engine of growth in the New Zealand economy;
  • increasing numbers of skilled Māori are moving into entrepreneurship and employing considerable numbers of people; and

  • Despite the undoubted potential of the Māori economy there are a number of policy challenges to overcome and opportunities to identify and accelerate in order to realise this potential.

    This is the role of Te Kupenga the Māori Economic Development Unit Policy Team. We're looking for talented policy professionals to join our team.

    In this role you will have the opportunity to :

  • Lead components of complex and impactful policy projects potentially including :
  • projecting the future of the Māori economy;
  • developing a Māori economic prosperity strategy and implementation plan;
  • identifying Māori economic prosperity opportunities in a post-settlement environment; and
  • assessing the effectiveness of Māori business support and access to capital.
  • Leverage the incredibly diverse number of teams within MBIE and other agencies to deliver on your projects and empower them to deliver on theirs, particularly in areas that directly contribute to Māori economic prosperity.
  • Link with Māori in a measured, structured and authentic way in order to form mutually beneficial relationships that will also inform our policy work.Desired skills and experience
  • A strong policy background, including delivery of products.
  • An ability to think laterally and creatively.
  • Experience in policy writing and communicating complex concepts in a coherent and succinct way.
  • Experience in influencing team members, other teams and agencies to achieve results.About the team : The wider Te Kupenga Team is responsible for a range of policy, operational and investment functions.
  • The role of the Policy Team is to contribute to MBIE's purpose of growing Aotearoa New Zealand for all by leading the development of MBIE's Māori economic prosperity advice and thinking.
