AIG’s underwriters help to find insurance solutions for risks from a range of areas including life insurance, aviation, financial lines, casualty, environmental, catastrophic events, high net worth individuals, and boardroom liabilities.

Reporting to the Head of Financial Lines and Casualty, you will be driving underwriting excellence and profitable growth of the Financial Lines and Casualty Corporate portfolio for New Zealand and be the face of AIG in the NZ market for M&A (mergers and acquisitions) Insurance.

Your contribution at AIG As a Leader, you are respected for your deep technical expertise and / or ability to oversee programs and processes.

You balance the needs of multiple stakeholders, making sound decisions using data, analysis, experience, and judgment, along with a risk mindset.

Ultimately, you take ownership for key outcomes. Key Accountabilities : Assist in developing business plans and budgets and carry out the appropriate functions within the business plan.

Establish / Maintain strong customer / industry relationships including : Broker relationships at all levels with indigenous and international broking firms Direct relationships with clients where possible Good working relationships with competitors on coinsurance accounts Solid relationships with the reinsurance market Developing commercially successful relationships with M&A (mergers and acquisitions) production and distribution sources with focus on brokers, law firms, investment banks, accountants, and private equity funds.

Regularly attending and presenting at external client meetings, commercial and legal seminars with a view to building relationships.

Propose and develop new transaction insurance products. Deal origination and initiation for Representations and Warranties insurance, and delivering a solution for the client in conjunction with the regional M&A team.

Closely assist the regional M&A team with underwriting support for deals originating from New Zealand. Underwriting Casualty / Financial Lines business including new and renewal business within authorities granted and in accordance with profit centre guidelines including reviewing and signing-

off referrals from underwriters within the team. Responsible for the operational execution of the underwriting process, including service levels, error rates, customer satisfaction, and underwriting leakage rates.

Perform regular quality control / audits of underwriting staff in order to validate compliance with underwriting policies, procedures, and guidelines.

Mentor and train Underwriters to enhance team’s performance. Together with the Head of FLC be involved in the review of the profit studies and take the lead for executing underwriting strategies required as a result of outcome of the profitability study.

Deliver financial reports showing production, renewal and new business, strike rates, retentions, market activities, lost accounts etc.

Assist with the development and implementation of strategies for (i) retention rates; (ii) rate movements; and (iii) new business.

Identify key targets and key renewals and engage in the underwriting process to secure a successful outcome. Continual review and development of Products and development of new Products including associated Marketing material Ensure credit control procedures are maintained and followed to company standards.

Attain appropriate levels of expertise in all product lines including changes and developments. Complete all delegated projects in a timely manner.

Develop and improve office systems on an ongoing basis including the department's self-audit procedures. Direct responsibility for monitoring of premium processing including : Ensuring that estimates are met and that premiums are processed in a timely manner.

Ensure that accounts are processed according to AIG guidelines and GST rules. Monitor receivables and unallocated cash and liaise with Accounts Department with regard to collections.

Supervise the team effectively and ensure they operate within the appropriate level of authority and in accordance with company procedures.

Identify technical and professional development needs within team and ensure career development plans are initiated. Empower the team for success by eliminating distractions and barriers to change.

Positively motivate others and energize team members to give their best. Champions diversity and inclusion by acting as mentor for young talent.

What we are looking for Knowledge & Skills Essential Strong background in general insurance experience specifically in Financial Lines and Casualty.

Proven record of accomplishment in underwriting, claims, distribution or analytics and sound understanding of the Financial Lines and Casualty insurance market.

Strong technical knowledge of commercial underwriting including Financial Lines and Casualty lines. Proven experience or understanding of how to blend growth orientation with sound underwriting judgment.

Background in delivering business results through initiating and leading change e.g. market segment appetite, operating model change, etc.

Excellent communication and relationship building skills, with both internal and external stakeholders. Knowledge of market segmentation, portfolio management, technical pricing, business acquisition and distribution.

Self-starter with motivation to lead through uncertainty and to manage through ambiguity. Analytical and quantitative skills.

Working understanding of reinsurance placement Strong customer service ethic, with sound understanding of the business processes Ability to build strong relationships both internally and externally.

  • Strong execution and results orientation Proven record of accomplishment of people management experience. Desired Commonwealth qualified lawyer preferred, or other relevant M&A transactional experience such as tax or accounting Strong technical knowledge in relation to negotiating and managing M&A transactions Excellent legal, technical and business development skills Strong written and oral communication skills;
  • extremely proficient drafter of legal and commercial documents Ability to negotiate with commercially and legally sophisticated advisors and clients Understanding of, and positive profile within, the NZ insurance market an advantage.
