Palmerston North, Manawatu-WanganuiPurpose Statement : This position is to : Promote a culture the University’s research community, including withinResearch & Enterprise (R&E), of effective knowledge transfer, engagementand entrepreneurial activities to deliver greater value (impact1) from researchactivities.

  • Provide clear and high calibre research impact advice to research andprofessional staff across the research community and the Research Academicand Enterprise portfolio;
  • support them with the development and use offrameworks, plans, tools and other resources to enable them to understand,position for, and deliver high value impact from research and researchprocesses including to research rankings and researcher visibility.

    Contribute to the enhancement of research impact skills at an individual, groupand systemic level including the development and enhancement of systems tocapture, connect and leverage off research impact initiatives across theUniversity, including the Colleges, Library and other professional service lines,as well as with partners and clients beyond the university.

    Align and adapt the above functions with : changing demands of the New Zealand research funding system in additionto international research opportunitiespartner and client needs and contributionsthe University’s key research and learning strategies, policies, supportinfrastructure and research delivery activities in order to maximize theUniversity’s performance and achieve the objectives contained in theUniversity’s key strategic planning documents.

    We actively strive tocreate an enabling culture in the work and with our clients.Job Description : Research Impact Advisor II, 19 Jan 2019 Page 2Key Accountabilities : Lead initiatives to identify, establish, encourage, develop and deliver highcalibre research impact mechanisms, content, and resources in conjunctionwith others.

    Support the research objectives of the University by maximizing the efficacyof research impact communications, develop resources to assist researchersto position research for greater impact, capture those impact initiatives andreflect them in research reporting.

  • Establish and maintain networks with other research impact focusedindividuals and organisations to identify and assess optimal application of thefollowing research impact elements within the University : managementframeworks;
  • infrastructure (including impact tracking software and systems);engagement, methods of rapidly identifying partner and client interests andneeds;
  • and impact assessment and evaluation mechanisms. Draw on the experiences and expertise focused around research impact inother jurisdictions, consider that in light of the university / New Zealandcontext(s), and tailor the research impact advice and guidance to the currentand future impact reporting requirements of researchers, research partnersand end-

    users. This includes identifying and explaining synergies between impact’ as conceived by different cultures and settings.

    Develop frameworks and systems to assist researchers’ upskill in positioningtheir work for greater impact, engagement, co-

    development / design, effectiveknowledge mobilization / dissemination, impact delivery, reporting andassessment. This includes providing mechanisms to identify and respond tostakeholder segments, and to tailor research delivery through differentimplementation pathways.

    Capture and showcase examples of optimal research impact practices, andcontribute to a more impact-focused and engaged University.

    Work closely with other members of the Research Innovation & Impact Teamto ensure new research impact initiatives / frameworks / reporting systemsseamlessly dovetail into existing research ideation, proposal development,monitoring, reporting, communication and skill development systems andresearch and researcher development initiatives.

  • Establish and monitor mechanism to align, leverage off, or influence researchimpact initiatives with : existing strategies;
  • operational processes includingresearch proposal development, researcher development initiatives; andresearch communication, profile building and recognition initiatives.

  • Establish systems and processes to capture, collate, leverage off and monitorthe performance of research impact mechanisms and processes;
  • to improvethe flow and efficacy of research impact resources and information; and toidentify, monitor and manage associated risks in a timely and effectivemanner.

    Develop internal communication mechanisms and content to ensure RAEstaff and their key stakeholders are well informed, and continually improvetheir understanding and positioning toward greater impact.

    Encourage and enhance collaborative and collegial communication systemsacross and beyond the university. Where possible draw on, use or applyMassey University’s academic knowledge and excellence in media andcommunications, evaluation, framework conceptualization etc to enhanceresources for staff and to foster an impact-

    focused culture.General responsibilitiesDevelop and maintain positive and effective working relationships andnetworks amongst staff at Massey and beyond, including within Research &Enterprise, key roles within the colleges, External Relations, key stakeholdersincluding funders, researchers, and media outlets to facilitate the performanceof the above duties.

  • Contribute to strategic and business planning processes within Research &Enterprise and support change when required.Take all practicable steps to ensure their own health, safety and wellbeing inthe workplace and that no action or inaction on their own part harms others;

    A postgraduate research-based qualification and / or experience inwriting, assessing, and improving research proposals would be an advantage.

  • An understanding of any / all of the following would be advantageous : the tertiary education sector and changes affecting it nationally andinternationally;
  • the New Zealand research funding system;international and national drivers and trends in effective researchengagement and impact,communicating and developing different frameworks of impact acrossdifferent cultures and contexts.

    Experience : Excellent written and verbal communication skills and demonstrated ability tocontext-set, design and deliver high calibre learning and developmentresources.

    A proven aptitude and experience in effective knowledge transfer andengagement including both traditional and emerging dissemination anduptake mechanisms.

    A strong ability to adapt, translate, and apply research to relevant audiencesand to empower others to achieve impact from their research activities.

    Demonstrated successful experience and expertise relating to designing,managing, producing, and maintaining support services in a complexenvironment.
