    Our Youth Justice Residences operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and are responsible for providing a safe, secure, and supportive environment where rangatahi in our care can access services and support to if they are sentenced or awaiting an outcome from Court due to offending.

    Whakatakapokai is the most recent of five Youth Justice Residences operating across Aotearoa.

    Our aspiration at Whakatakapokai is to provide an environment that focusses on delivery of tailored care plans that are culturally focused, therapeutic, and restorative.

    We want our rangatahi to build and maintain their connections with whānau, hapū, iwi; and develop the skills so they can make positive decisions that reduce the likelihood of reoffending.

    Whakatakapokai is particularly focused on achieving positive change through Māori world view (Te Ao Māori) practices.

    Mō te tūnga About the role

    Youth Workers have a significant influence in role modelling healthy and positive behaviours. You will engage with and provide high quality professional support to our rangatahi by assisting with everything from daily care routine, participation in education, activities, and appointments to planning and development of social and cultural programmes.

    It is important that you are motivated to engage in our way of being so a willingness to learn and apply Māori restorative approaches is essential.

    You will work within a collaborative and reflective workplace so need to be open minded and a team player who is committed to achieving Oranga Tamariki's vision, purpose, and values together.

    Relationships and communication are key! You have a lead role in strengthening connections across the organisation and with community partners that benefit rangatahi and their whānau.

    The role will involve :

  • Building strong relationships with rangatahi, whanau and community
  • Supporting daily care needs of rangatahi and assisting them to learn life skills
  • Mentoring - one on one work with rangatahi, whānau to assist them to achieve their identified goals
  • Supporting rangatahi to engage in education, training, activities and programmes available to them while in residence
  • Activity development and delivery
  • Participating in cultural activities e.g., mihi whakatau, kapa haka, hui-a-whānau
  • Flexibility to support rangatahi in different settings outside of the residence e.g., marae, in nature, in vocational training / education, in Court.
  • The role operates on a rotating roster covering 24 hours, 7 days a week. Annual remuneration for this position starts between $45,000 and $56,400 dependant on experience.

    Mōu About you

    To apply for this role, you must demonstrate the following qualifications and experience :

  • Experience caring for youth presenting with neuro-diverse or challenging behaviours
  • A current New Zealand drivers' licence
  • Ability to work and grow through pressure situations
  • Understanding of and willingness to grow skills in Te Ao Māori me ona Tikanga
  • Ability to quickly establish and maintain relationships
  • The right to work in New Zealand
  • Ability to work Saturday and Sundays with flexible weekday hours
