We are experiencing an exciting time for innovation and improvement in the sector and have a busy pipeline of important work including Fisheries System Reform, Revitalising the Hauraki Gulf, Strengthening Fishing Rules and Policies, Ensuring Healthy Ocean Ecosystems, and the implementation of On-Board cameras to name a few.

As the Manager Aquatic Environment, you will lead the delivery of Fisheries New Zealand research projects, and the provision of scientific advice, on the interactions between the environment and seafood industry.

You will collaborate with colleagues across the business unit and externally and will ensure research projects have clear objectives relevant to meeting fisheries management outcomes.

You will be instrumental in lifting the science capability within MPI and will lead this important workstream at a time of internal culture shift and mindset change.

Core to your success in this position is people leadership and in particular your ability to create a high performing Aquatic Environment team.

You will coordinate the advice and activities of the team providing technical review and oversight of work.

Core responsibilities include :

  • Lead research workload management for the aquatic environment area
  • Provide pastoral care and succession planning within the team
  • Provide technical advice and the oversight of work and technical review
  • Be involved in review of science through document review and science working groups
  • Develop research projects and plans aligned to Fisheries New Zealand management needs
  • Maintain domestic and international situational awareness of the fisheries scientific research and fisheries management environment through continuous environment scanning.

    To be successful in this role you will need :

  • Technical expertise in fisheries science or ecological impacts
  • Previous experience analysing technical issues and making decisions with financial impact
  • Ability to build a collaborative team and foster a high performing team environment
  • Proven ability to lead projects and achieve results
  • Track record in relationship management across a range of groups and individuals with potentially conflicting interests
  • Familiarity with the sector and the legislation relating to fisheries and aquaculture and Maori, including the Treaty of Waitangi would be an advantage.
