About the role

Labour Standards Officer is the ideal role to start your career dealing with employment relations issues. In this role you will gain extensive knowledge on minimum employment standards legislation which you will apply daily towards effectively resolving issues raised by employees which relate to minimum employment standards.

You will be provided with regular guidance and continuous professional development, including the opportunity to study for nationally recognised regulatory qualifications.

You will be expected to work autonomously, have a proactive approach to your work, keep up-to-date with changes in the legislation and adhere to deadlines.

You will also contribute to a high-performing team and actively take part in team quality and review processes.

Skills and experience required :

Whilst this is an entry level position, it is preferred for the candidate to possess the following attributes :

  • A strong interest in, and / or study towards, developing a career in employment relations
  • Ability to use strong analytical and critical thinking skills to make effective and sound decisions
  • A flexible in approach to problem solving
  • Demonstrate proficient questioning skills to understand employees and employers circumstances to identify underlying issues.
  • Ability to be a professional influence in challenging situations
  • Ability to explain complex issues and policies in a manner that can clearly be understood both over the phone and in written communication
  • Ability to maintain detailed and accurate records
  • Ability to relate to and build rapport with people from different backgrounds
  • A strong team player with ability to work collaboratively
  • Able to contribute to and support a team learning culture
  • Must have excellent time management skills with the ability to prioritise your workload
  • Must have legal right to live and work in NZ

    The Labour Standards Officer is a team member position in MBIE's Labour Inspectorate. The Labour Inspectorate is accountable for the enforcement of minimum employment standards through :

  • Detecting and addressing non-compliance with minimum employment standards legislation;
  • Providing information and education to support compliance and raise awareness of employment standards;
  • Preventing non-compliance by assisting employers to implement systems and practices that comply with employment law;
  • Providing services that encourage and support employers and employees to resolve employment standards disputes.
  • The Labour Standards Team supports the Labour Inspectorate by assisting employees and employers to resolve one-off instances where minimum employment standards have been breached.

    Labour Standards Officers provide assistance, advice, education and information primarily by telephone to clients of the Labour Inspectorate in order to enable them to meet their legislative requirements relating to minimum employment standards.
