NIWA is New Zealand's leading provider of research and applied services related to water, atmosphere and climate science.

Our research areas cover everything from the ocean floor to the ozone layer including marine and freshwater quantity and quality, the organisms that live in these environments, natural hazards and air quality.

  • NIWA's in-house IT team develops, maintains, operates and supports an extensive and diverse mix of business and scientific systems;
  • work that is both important and interesting.

    We have an opportunity for a Linux engineer (intermediate or senior) to join our IT Operations team in Wellington. You will be a member of a multi-skilled team that owns the delivery of the IT services to both internal and external customers.

    The IT Operations team develops, delivers and supports technology solutions that are as unique as the original requirements.

    You will be involved with the support of all NIWA IT infrastructure within New Zealand, including the systems situated upon our two science vessels.

    This role will specialise on the Linux based systems within NIWA where you will be using linux in a range of interesting ways and have the opportunity to be involved with the people doing the science.

    We have a wide variety of systems including CentOS, SLES, Red Hat and Ubuntu. A good understanding of nginx, ansible and / or puppet, and open source database technologies are all an advantage.

  • In addition to the Linux systems, you will be working with a wide range of other technologies including, but not limited to;
  • Microsoft Server, Commvault, VMWare, Juniper network products, Fortigate firewalls, IBM SANs and HP Servers.

    Just as important as your technology skills is your ability to fit into an established team of talented engineers. You need to be able to bring a level of maturity gained from several years' experience but also the flexibility that will see you asking for assistance when you are working on unfamiliar systems.

    If you have a Linux DevOps mindset with strong sysadmin skills as well as one or more of the above technologies, enjoy learning, are a self-starter who is able to work with minimal supervision, have a strong customer service ethic and enjoy the dynamics of contributing within a team dedicated to enhancing IT systems across an organisation, then we want to hear from you.

    We are offering competitive remuneration and benefits, free parking, coffee and an attractive waterfront location at Greta Point, Wellington.
