About us

Working for the Canterbury District Health Board - working for the Community. Our vision is underpinned by our primary goal of achieving a truly collaborative, whole of system' approach where everyone in the health system works together to do the right thing for the patient and the right thing for the system and our community as a whole.

The CDHB has five birthing facilities, located all over the wider Canterbury region. These range from our tertiary facility at the heart of Christchurch city through to our tranquil midwifery led community units located in our surrounding rural townships.

About the role

Christchurch Women's Hospital is a modern acute, major teaching hospital for midwifery and obstetrics. A dynamic, dedicated and specialised team of health professionals work within our purpose built, tertiary maternity unit.

It is here that we have created an exciting opportunity for an experienced Registered Midwife to join our team in this new role as Midwifery Manager.

Supported by the Director of Midwifery and senior midwifery and management team you will be responsible for providing both operational and professional support for our team of midwives as well as working closely with our obstetric and neonatal colleagues.

The role will focus on promoting midwifery excellence and facilitating quality improvements for women and their babies when they are using our service.

As a highly organised and motivated experienced midwife, your background to date in your career and your vision for maternity services within a tertiary environment will add value to our changing service provision within the Canterbury Maternity System.

Christchurch Women's is located on the Christchurch Hospital campus and as such we have the ability to work closely with many talented colleagues in other parts of our health system and how some of their solutions can be applied within maternity.

You will have a strong background within tertiary maternity services and be a recognised clinical expert, have extensive clinical experience, proven leadership ability and a relevant postgraduate qualification enabling you to provide the professional leadership we are looking for in this role.

This role will be based at Christchurch Women's but a strong understanding of the role of community midwife led units and our relationship with Lead Maternity Carers will be critical.

Excellent interpersonal skills coupled with a demonstrated ability to enthusiastically lead a diverse team in a challenging but supportive environment is imperative.

A commitment to innovative quality improvement and familiarity with managing change along with your ability to proactively provide clear direction and problem solve is essential.

Not only will you benefit from our exceptional teams skill and culture, you will also have the additional benefit of working closely with the Director of Midwifery and the experienced midwifery leadership team.

Christchurch is also the heart of New Zealand midwifery with the New Zealand College of Midwives national team being located in central Christchurch.

This is a particularly exciting time for someone who is innovative and passionate about Midwifery to join our leadership team as we look to the future and realign our maternity care with a strong mandate to support the maternity model of care but start to do things differently for women and their babies.

We have an increasing midwifery workforce with many of our midwives starting to progress within different roles to also improve our service.

This is a key midwifery leadership role that will provide you with the opportunity for personal growth, strategic professional development and a chance to positively influence the midwifery profession within the CDHB.
