Dual Role - OGC New Plymouth)

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES To provide safe and efficient laboratory services for SGS and external customers in conjunction with providing safe and efficient branch support duties.

Hours of work will be shared between the SGS facility at New Plymouth and at 3rd Party SGS customer laboratories in the South Taranaki Region. REPORTING

to the Branch Manager Operations and Laboratory Services OGC Downstream Services, New Plymouth.


Perform testing of customer and SGS samples in accordance with relevant test method / s for the specific product and test.

Provide regular set weekly rostered laboratory technician and additional laboratory technician relief cover (as required) at 3rd Party SGS customer laboratories in the South Taranaki Region.

Perform calibration and maintenance checks of customer and SGS equipment within the laboratory in accordance with best practice and manufacturers specifications.

Assist with maintaining the chemical stock list.

Perform all tests and duties in accordance with test methods, quality assurance documentation and quality records required to maintain NZS / ISO / 9001 / IEC17025 accreditation.

Perform all tests and duties in accordance with legislative and SGS Health and Safety and Environmental Policies and requirements.

Perform all tests and duties to ensure a high standard of customer service for both internal & external customers is professionally maintained at all times.

ssist Senior Laboratory Technician & Branch Quality Manager with continuous improvements to the Branch Quality Management System.

Branch Support Duties Assist Branch Manager manage continuous improvements within the laboratory and the wider branch operation.

Assist Branch Manager manage one-off special projects for New Plymouth Branch and other NZ OGC Branches.

Provide assistance with Microsoft Office in particular Excel and Word including trouble shooting of computers and systems.

Assist with branch administration relevant to your position and training.

Complete minor repairs and maintenance of laboratory fittings and equipment.

Assist with other duties relevant to your position and training.


Demonstrates strong commitment to SGS and Client HSE Policies, Procedures, and Work Instructions by participating in safety meetings, completing required training, intervening in unsafe situations and complying fully with all applicable laws and regulations related to HSE.

Responds appropriately to emergency situations and assists other staff members in maintaining readiness to respond to emergencies within the workplace.

In accordance with the SGS HSE Management System requirements, disposes of, or directs the disposal of, waste generated as a part of daily work performed in a safe manner and in compliance with all waste transportation and disposal regulations and requirements.

Reports all incidents (actual incidents and near misses) in accordance with the SGS Incident Reporting requirements.

Uses all equipment (including safety equipment) in the manner intended and reports any damaged / lost equipment to supervisor and maintains a clean and tidy workspace.

Maintains awareness of hazards and proposes controls to supervisor, HSE Representatives or relevant client / site contact.

Actively participates in incident investigations and risk assessments as deemed necessary by SGS management.

Complies fully with all SGS, Customer & Port Site Minimum Operating Requirements Rules and requirements.

PROFILE Knowledge of and experience in a related industry and with Quality Assurance principles and systems an advantage.

Proven analytical and problem solving skills. Responsible, adaptable, honest and reliable. Must be able to work flexible hours, days and nights, Monday to Sunday including Public Holidays.

Must be able to travel from home base and remain away overnight / s on SGS business if required.

Able to read understand and follow SGS & Customer instructions work instructions and procedures

Ability to work effectively and safely both autonomously and within a team environment.

Ability to interact freely with customers and with others across all levels within SGS.

Ability to communicate (verbal and written) across cultures.

Ability to influence and negotiate across all levels both inside and outside of SGS.

Ability to write and read reports.

Ability to show initiative and organization skills.

Hands-On aptitude.

Have own reliable motorized transport.


Have a tertiary chemistry qualification.

A tertiary mathematical qualification an advantage.

Hold a current full New Zealand Class 1 Drivers License.

Have proven proficient in Microsoft skills and in particular Excel and Word.
