Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

This Finance Business Partner role is intended to be an entry-level position for an experienced accountant to progress into a finance business partner role.

You will be responsible for smaller business units and be mentored and supported by other finance staff to develop your skills.

As this position is intending to cover a smaller portfolio, this role will also support the central Management Accounting team as required.

The Finance Business Partner is a key member of the Finance & Procurement Directorate, Corporate Services Branch. They provide business and financial information and advice that assists in strategic and investment decision making, as well as reviewing the inputs into the preparation of external Government budget cycle returns, external financial reports and liaises with Treasury and auditors on these matters as required.

The role builds trusted relationships and is a key point of contact for business unit(s) for which they are responsible.

Key responsibilities will be to :

  • lead the medium- and long-term financial advice and reporting for relevant business units, taking a whole of MPI approach to the advice provided
  • evaluate and advise on proposed budget initiatives, support creation of new investment proposals and develop business plans
  • proactively and continuously monitor risks and opportunities for business units
  • work with the business unit's Business Accountants to facilitate a seamless detailed business planning and budgeting process
  • work with the business units to ensure that business and financial information is accurate, integrated with cost recovery and project information and produced in a timely manner
  • work within constraints such as the Public Finance Act, NZ GAAP, Treasury Instructions and Treasury Circulars in the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) context
  • support the Central Management Accounting team as required

    To be successful in the role you will have a previous track record of achieving results, building positive stakeholder relationships, showing strategic capability and possess the ability to maintain a clear focus on long-term organisational and financial goals.

    You will also be highly analytical, with a strong attention to detail and possess intellectual curiosity.

    You will need the following skills and experience to be successful :

  • Chartered accountant qualification (CAANZ or equivalent) with 3-5 years post qualification experience
  • Experience in analysing technical issues and contributing towards business decisions with financial impact
  • Ability to influence others and encourage contributions from people over whom there is no management responsibility.
  • Knowledge and / or experience in assisting with strategic decisions including formulating business decisions
  • Able to build and maintain positive stakeholder relationships and effective networks across and within organisations.
  • Be motivated by a challenge, bring a positive, flexible and agile approach to work with a strong can do attitude
  • The salary for this role is $109,626 - $122,523 per annum, dependant on experience.
