We are looking for a candidate for our Trade Policy team in our International Policy Directorate. This is fast-paced and interesting international-focused work supporting our primary sectors, including opportunities to :

  • represent New Zealand's interests and positions in bilateral, plurilateral and multilateral international negotiations, processes and forums;
  • support New Zealand's engagement on emerging issues such as e-commerce that are fundamentally changing the international trading environment; and
  • maintain and strengthen bilateral relationships key trading partners;
  • grow and protect our primary sector trading partners including through working closely with MPI's off-shore posts.

    Mō tō mātou rōpū - About our team

    The Trade Policy team at MPI supports New Zealand's primary industries by working hard to ensure excellent access for our primary products into as many international markets as possible.

    Ensuring that trade policy delivers new opportunities for the primary sectors will be even more important following Covid-19.

    The team's work involves engaging in negotiations in bilateral, plurilateral and multilateral contexts and providing the technical expertise required to address particular trade issues relevant to the primary sectors, for example, understanding tariff quota administration systems, addressing non-tariff barriers to trade, and engaging on the agricultural trade policies of other countries

    Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

    Due to an internal movement we have a position available at a senior policy analyst level. The role will support MPI's contribution to international trade negotiations as well as our work in various international organisations. This could include :

  • Engaging on trade barriers faced by primary sector businesses including SMEs,
  • Providing input into analytical work on market diversification,
  • Building linkages between MPI's domestic policy and New Zealand's broader trade policy,
  • Supporting economic research and engagement with international economic agencies (e.g. OECD),
  • Engaging with other government agencies (e.g. MFAT, NZTE) around New Zealand's trade-led recovery strategy.

    We are looking for a candidate that is able to represent MPI (and New Zealand) on the international stage and provide high quality analysis on complex issues.

    The successful candidate will have a strong interest in the success of the primary sectors. While previous experience in international work is ideal, these roles offer the opportunity for a motivated candidate to move into international policy work.

    Specifically, we are looking for someone who has :

  • Excellent analytical skills with the capability to analyse complex issues and provide sound advice.
  • Policy experience, agriculture, farming, trade, who can think strategically and use evidence to inform their work.
  • Strong knowledge and / or interest in New Zealand's primary industries or regulatory / farming systems for primary products
  • Superb communication and influencing skills and who can work collaboratively within MPI, across government and with our wide range of stakeholders.
  • A relevant qualification (e.g. science, legal, economic and / or international relations)
