Anatomic Pathology at Whangarei Hospital is experiencing rapid growth; we are experiencing an increased demand for cytology services.

We are looking to expand our dedicated team and so are looking for an experienced Scientist. The laboratory provides a Histology and non-gynae cytology service for Northland.

We receive specimens from both the community and four Northland laboratories; servicing a population of 150,000.

The Role :

The Medical laboratory Scientist / QTA role will be responsible for working within the cytology laboratory ensuring a high standard of work at all times, the role must have technical skills and theoretical knowledge to participate in the primary screening of all non-gynae specimens, including fine needle aspiration samples, (FNAs) where an eye for excellence is required.

The Scientist / QTA will be expected to participate in all aspects of specimen preparation, including assisting with onsite FNA’s, and mentoring other department technical staff.

Participation in the RCPA quality assurance program (cytology) and in-house quality assurance is essential. The ideal candidate must be self-motivated and display the ability to work independently.

Primary cytology skills :

  • Have experience in preparation and staining of all non-gynae samples.
  • Demonstrate a high level of non-gynae cytology experience, which will enable the ability to primary screen and a write a preliminary report, on specimens received within the cytology department.
  • Previous experience in assisting with the onsite preparation of fine needle aspiration (FNA) samples, (ROSE procedures), and their adequacy requirements, will be advantageous.
  • Knowledge of additional tests requirements for samples taken at these procedures is an advantage.

    General skills :

  • Demonstrated ability to apply high-level scientific judgement to perform, interpret various sample types.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective professional relationships with clinicians and colleagues.
