Our service

The University of Otago has had a Proctor for nearly 50 years. Our office is responsible for a large number of roles throughout the University with the emphasis on the safety of students / staff and maintaining a healthy learning environment for all.

The main role of Campus Watch is essentially pastoral with a desire to foster and maintain a safe and secure Campus environment that encourages and enables all students to realise their maximum potential.

Campus Watch is a diverse group of people readily available to offer assistance and advice when or wherever it is required.

The role

This is a rare opportunity to join the team in a leadership role as our new Team Leader. You will lead one of the five teams who work a set roster that enables the Proctor’s Office to have 24 / 7 coverage.

In this role you will :

  • Supervise and lead Campus Watch Team Members to ensure they positively influence personal safety and behaviour on and off campus;
  • Deliver pastoral care to students and prevent crime and disorder; and
  • Work towards enhancing the student environment.
  • You will also play an important role in building and maintaining positive working relationships with a wide range of external and internal stakeholders.

    Your skills and experience

  • Experienced leader with a high integrity and proven ability to relate to young people;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Proven people management skills;
  • Strong pastoral care experience;
  • An ability to form effective working relationships with people of varying background;
  • A high standard of common sense, patience and tact;
  • A good working knowledge of relevant New Zealand law; and
  • A well-developed sense of humour is also valued.
  • You will be physically fit and healthy, hold current full drivers licence and current First Aid certificate. You will also hold, or be willing to obtain, a Firearms Licence.

    Further details

    This is a permanent, full-time position that involves shift work outside of core working hours.

    The salary level for this position is provisionally evaluated as Level 5, and is subject to change.

    The successful candidate will have no criminal convictions and be willing to undergo a Police clearance check.
