Within the Agriculture, Marine and Plant Policy Directorate of Policy and Trade branch, the Horticulture Sector Policy team works on economic, consumer market, and cross-

sector strategic issues to support MPI's goal of sustainably growing the value of New Zealand's primary sector exports. About our team and the role The Horticulture Sector Policy team is growing and looking for an ambitious and experienced Principal Adviser.

The kinds of questions you might grapple with include : How can we use examples of best practice industry structures and on-

the-ground practices to encourage the sustainable growth of New Zealand's fruit, wine, vegetable, arable and honey industries?

How can we influence policy outcomes to achieve the right balance between protecting New Zealand and pursuing sustainable growth of the horticulture sector?

Are any changes needed to improve the efficiency and integrity of horticulture legislation? How can we ensure the continued supply of affordable fruit and vegetables for New Zealanders, while also growing exports?

What are the next billion dollar horticulture industries? Who we are looking for We need an experienced Principal Adviser who is able to contribute to our work on complex strategic policy issues through a combination of innovative thinking and the proactive pursuit of opportunities to influence people and deliver results.

  • To be successful in this role you will need : The ability to identify, articulate and clearly communicate core elements of an issue or proposal;
  • A strategic perspective and ability to make creative and informed connections between commercial, environmental and social issues;
  • Experience and confidence in engaging with senior leaders, ministers and external stakeholders (including industry, iwi and other government departments);
  • A fast pace and drive to go above and beyond to achieve results; Excellent written and verbal communication skills and an ability to provide clear context and guidance to junior staff;
  • Experience in developing and leading work programmes, building organisational and stakeholder support for your work, and perseverance in the face of ambiguity, constraints and challenges;
  • Understanding of government policy processes and ideally understanding of the primary industries; Commercial business acumen and a passion to contribute to the sustainable growth of New Zealand's horticulture sector.
