Job Description

If you love working in the outdoors, appreciate a remote natural environment, and have good practical field skills with a proven ability for leading and organising work, then this is the ranger's job for you!

Our Supervisor ranger role in Haast is vacant. We are looking for a person to lead a small team of up to three rangers to undertake our recreation, tourism and historic work programme in the area.

The successful applicant will be a natural leader and collaborator, who enjoys the challenge of working in an isolated area with responsibility for a large and diverse work programme.

  • In South Westland we pride ourselves on the quality and range of tourism, recreation and historic assets we manage. The recreation opportunities range from backcountry huts and tracks, used predominantly for hunting tahr, chamois and deer, to campsites beside pristine lakes or wild remote west coast beaches;
  • but also includes a range of front country sites like Ship Creek.

    This Ranger position is pivotal to the operations of the DOC team in South Westland. We are looking for someone who is a great team player, good communicator, with loads of initiative to get out and get things done.

    This position is critical to leading and achieving our work in the field, so a strong practical skill set is necessary. You should be good with maintenance and care for small plant and machinery, have good building / carpentry skills and an eye for detail to ensure all our assets are maintained to a high standard.

    You will need to be able to live and work in a remote rural community and have a positive can-do attitude. If this sounds like you apply now.

    A full, clean driver licence and experience with trailers is essential.

    Eligibility to work in New Zealand is mandatory, including a valid work visa covering the whole period of employment if applying internationally.

    Please apply online. Applications must include a cover letter, CV and evidence of the required capabilities as per the role description.
