  • Essential requirements :

  • Obtain and maintain the requisite security clearances for this position.
  • Relevant Tertiary Qualifications and / or extensive demonstrated experience in managing regulatory and / or statutory functions.

    The Director, Firearms Registry provides strategic leadership relating to a wide range of strategic reforms, programs, policies, and initiatives to support compliance and administration to the Firearms Act (1996) and Weapons Prohibition Act (1998).

    The role is responsible for the management and delivery of comprehensive firearms licensing and registrations services and other approval schemes under the Act.

    The role is responsible for driving efficiencies within the Registry and influencing the continuous improvement in industry regulation, legislative compliance, and internal systems and processes to ensure optimum service delivery to both internal and external stakeholders and customers.

    This will require youto :

  • Exercise delegated authority from the Commissioner of Police for all functions prescribed in the relevant acts and provide leadership in the delivery of an effective and efficient licensing function, ensuring service and performance standards are monitored and that any substandard behaviour is dealt with in a timely manner.
  • Lead the development and implementation of licensing reforms and sustainable plans for improved customer service and compliance functions in terms of delivery, performance and cost.
  • Provide major input into national firearms policy development and maintain high levels of public trust and confidence in the administration of, compliance with and enforcement of both the Firearms and Weapons Prohibition Acts.
  • The successful candidate will be anexperienced, dynamic and talented, multi-dimensional executive within a significant and complex service basedorganisation.

  • Participate in national and state government firearms meetings and forums, actively engage with the community, dealers and other stakeholders to ensure key firearms strategies are communicated and promoted.
  • Establish and maintain sound working relationships with operational police and stakeholders to assist with the identification of trends and risks and to deliver seamless quality service and drive the provision of intelligence capability and the sharing of information at the appropriate level to support police and enhance public safety.
  • Ensure critical analysis of complaints, suggestions and recommendations, and drive the development, implementation and evaluation of processes involved in risk assessments and performance analysis to ensure continuous improvement in systems and processes.
  • Lead the development of structured approval, assessment and adjudication processes and provide strategic, expert and accurate advice in a timely manner on a range of issues related to firearms and weapons to the NSWPF executive team and other key stakeholders.
  • Implement an online self-service portal to provide the main interaction channel with customers, including dealers which will allow customers to track progress of applications, with real time processing where possible to significantly improve the timeliness of service.
  • Key challenges

  • Maintaining sound knowledge of legislative frameworks, Government policies, statutory requirements and keeping abreast of industry issues and best practice, to ensure that Firearms Registries activities can sustain public, Governmental, judicial and industry scrutiny.
  • Representing NSW Police Force positively, transparently and professionally while managing Government, industry and community expectations about Firearms roles, responsibilities and service delivery.
  • Influencing and negotiating across internal and external stakeholder groups to manage and deliver complex and strategically oriented firearms licensing and registration systems designed to increase public safety.
