Do you want to spend part of each year living and working on a pest-free Hauraki Gulf Island?

This opportunity is for a permanent part-time role on Motuora Island. You would spend the summer there, from December until Easter each year.

There may be an opportunity to start earlier (eg September), subject to funding from a third party. Outside this period, you would be employed for one week per month to carry out necessary maintenance on the island.

Also during the winter period, you may be employed for up to three weeks at a time on other islands within the Auckland Inner Islands District, as decided by the District Operations Manager.

Motuora is being replanted with native forest, and has a resident population of North Island Brown kiwi which is used as a source for translocations elsewhere.

The Motuora Restoration Society have returned a number of seabirds, lizards and Wetapunga / Giant weta to the island.

Your responsibilities will include maintaining and overseeing the island's campground (capacity, 85 people per night) and bookable cabin, maintaining power system, water supply and amenity areas, biosecurity to keep the island pest-

free, weed control and helping restore the island's ecology.

Other responsibilities will include engaging with and assisting the Motuora Restoration Society, and helping with visits from other DOC staff, iwi and volunteers.

Motuora is of cultural significance to iwi, including the Marutuahu Confederation, who have a cultural redress area on the island as part of their Treaty of Waitangi Settlement with the Crown.

The successful applicant will have :

  • Experience living and working on an island or other relatively remote location.
  • Interpersonal skills for dealing with campers and other visitors.
  • Practical skills for maintaining small plant, power and water supplies and amenity areas.
  • Self-motivation and the ability to work unsupervised.
  • Experience with flora and fauna and with pest and weed control.
  • Willingness to work with community groups.
  • Eligibility to work in New Zealand is mandatory, including a valid work visa covering the whole period of employment if applying internationally.
