The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) provides a range of services to ensure New Zealand is protected from biological risk and that the food New Zealand businesses produce is safe and suitable for us all to consume & our natural resources are sustainable!

In July 2017, the bacterial infection Mycoplasma Bovis was found in cattle in the Oamaru area of the South Island. With the support of farmers, industry bodies and local communities, MPI is working hard to locate the disease, contain it and eradicate it from New Zealand.

We are seeking people to come and join our team based in Ashburton to focus on this response. This is a crucial role and we are seeking applications from those who are wanting to be part of a highly dedicated team working to protect our country and its resources.

The Welfare Advisor is responsible for coordinating advice and overseeing welfare delivery services at the regional level to ensure the immediate needs of individuals, families / whānau and communities are addressed.

Key responsibilities for the role are (but not limited to) :

  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of Welfare plans.
  • Coordinate welfare support at RCC to support on-ground alignment with operations field staff and recovery coordinators for individual farms and related farm plans.
  • Advise on regional welfare resource requirements.
  • Coordinate regional provision of welfare as outlined in the MB Human Welfare Action Plan, MB and Animal Welfare Action Plan and monitor impacts of response at an individual / community level within region.
  • Coordinate with local agencies and partner organisations' welfare functions as required.
  • Candidates will need to demonstrate :

  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to multi-task and prioritise.
  • Experience of working in a high-pressure environment.
  • Ability to deliver results under a tight deadline.
  • Strong communications, relationship management and interpersonal skills.
