About the department :
The Microbiology Department within LabPLUS provides a wide range of services including sexual health screening, enteric pathogens, to multiple resistant organisms.
We are also the national reference centre for Mycology, Anaerobes, and molecular typing Mycobacteria. Our Microbiologists provide advice about interpretation of microbiology results, treatment of infections and infection control issues.
We also work in close liaison with the infectious disease clinicians and the Infection Control service at Auckland City Hospital.
The Mycobacterial Laboratory under the Microbiology Department in LabPLUS is housed in the new state-of-the-art PC3 facility.
This facility routinely offers primary processing of clinical specimens for mycobacterial culture, identification of isolates, TB first and second line drug susceptibility testing (DST) as well as susceptibility testing for rapid growing mycobacterium The TB reference lab also collaborates with United Nations Development Programme in its initiative to provide access to external quality assessment to Pacific Island countries and territories.
About the position :
We are seeking a Technical Specialist for the Mycobacteria Reference and PC3 Lab within our Microbiology Department. The primary role of this position involves day to day responsibility for the general operational / maintenance oversight of the PC3 facility and technical knowledge and experience of all mycobacterial techniques.
This is a permanent full time position works 40 hours per week Monday to Friday.
About you :
Our successful candidate will have strong leadership skills with the ability to introduce new initiatives. You will have effective communication skills to interact with the clinicians and the other stakeholders.
Previous experience of mycobacterial culture techniques and a working knowledge of containment principles especially correct use of primary (Biohazard safety cabinets) and secondary containment like PC2 / PC3 laboratories as well as molecular experience is desirable but not a requirement.
Experience in a diagnostic Microbiology laboratory service is preferred.
To be considered for this role, you must be registered as a Medical Laboratory Scientist with the Medical Sciences Council with a current annual practicing certificate.
Overseas candidates with relevant qualification and experience will also be considered, if they are eligible for registration and willing to move to New Zealand.
