  • The Education Council is the professional body for all teachers. We are independent, and act in the interests of teachers to enable and support leadership to teachers and direction for the education profession, including teacher education, continued professional and leadership development.

    We establish and maintain criteria for teacher registration, standards for ongoing practice and criteria for the issue of practising certificates of different kinds.

    Alongside this, we monitor and maintain the requirements relating to conduct, competence and impairment and establish and maintain a code of professional responsibility for teachers.

    An important part of our role is setting the standards for qualifications for initial teacher education (ITE) and approving programmes in conjunction with quality assurance agencies.

    The purpose of the ITE Advisor role is to manage the Council processes to approve, review and monitor ITE programmes. The Council is currently revising these processes to support our new strategic framework for initial teacher education, so the advisor will have the opportunity to support the new design as part of a larger project team.

    You will be skilled at developing excellent systems and processes to support the Education Council in ensuring the delivery of high quality ITE programmes.

    You may have worked in an initial teacher education provider or had experience in qualification design or approval, and will have a relevant tertiary qualification.

    To be successful in this role you’ll need to demonstrate :

  • Strong communication skills including written, oral and listening skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills which enable highly effective relationships with a wide range of people
  • Highly developed analytical skills
  • Proven experience in project management
  • Knowledge of the Education sector, especially initial teacher education
  • An understanding of culturally responsive practices that uphold the Council’s commitment as a Te Tiriti o Waitangi partner
