Reporting to the Executive General Manager - Planning & Investment, you will be responsible for the leadership and development of a high performing team, responsible for the delivery of Auckland Transport's Strategic Projects Programme.

The Strategic Projects Programme is mandated through the Auckland Transport Alignment Project and the Regional Land Transport Plan (RLTP).

The role is focused on the development and delivery of robust and high quality business cases to support the decision making for Auckland's transport system.

This senior leadership role will also work alongside and support multi-disciplinary project teams including members from various organisations (specifically Auckland Council, KiwiRail and NZ Transport Agency).

Importantly you will have oversight and review work produced by professional advisors to ensure value for money is achieved and to ensure the community benefits are realised and optimised.


To be considered for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following skills and experience :

  • A Bachelor's degree in Transport Planning, Economics, Engineering, Management or related discipline.
  • Evidence of relevant, recent and continuing leadership, managerial and professional learning and development.
  • Extensive experience (10-15 years) in feasibility studies and business case development for large scale complex projects.
  • Strong history of developing infrastructure projects and programmes with a high level of public visibility.
  • Experience and positive track record in managing a team preferably in a political or highly complex organisation.
  • Good understanding and knowledge of business case process, transport planning and systems, urban planning policies, local government legislation, council practices and constraints.
  • Significant exposure in preparing and presenting clear presentations to a diverse range of stakeholders, from large public groups to boardroom format.
  • Experience in working in partnership with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders to create excellent services.
  • Has a good understanding and appreciation of the workings and functions of local government, including current and future business drivers and statutory requirements.
  • Understanding of statutory and policy framework for the planning and funding of transport in New Zealand i.e. LTMA, RMA, LGA.
